All of the popular events that take place every year on the Puget Sound in Seattle make it one of the top destinations in the country for recreational boating. Many of the boaters that enjoy these events end up being charged with boating under the influence, or BUI. Patrol boat officers crack down on this offense more and more every year as alcohol related offenses become less acceptable to society. Some of these arrests are made solely on observations made by the police.
Most BUI charges are misdemeanors. A conviction is much more likely if the individual operating the vessel has a BAC (Blood – Alcohol Level) of .08 or more. A BUI conviction can also result from proof that the boat driver was affected by drugs or alcohol at the time of the stop. If convicted for this crime you could be facing fines and even jail time. BUI laws in Seattle differ from DUI laws in that there aren’t mandatory minimums on jail sentences. Also, BUI convictions do not affect your motor vehicle driver’s license.
